On the morning of my last day in Tokyo, we went to the amazing Tsukiji Wholesale Fish Market. The main action happens at dawn, and we didn't get there until around 10:00, when they were already packing up to go home for the day. But still saw a lot of amazing things. The space is immense, the floors are wet, and workers drive little electric vehicles down the narrow spaces between vending stalls at breakneck speeds.
One of the first things I saw (but didn't get a picture of), was something I at first mistook for pig carcasses, and turned out to be enormous chunks of some giant fish.
Here are some photos of the market and its wares:
There are lots of great photos on line, easily found by doing a Google image search on "Tsukiji fish market".
Here's a trash can full of fish heads:

Our next stop was Tokyo Tower, clearly modeled on the Eiffel Tower, though you can't see the Eiffel-esque legs in this picture:
This is at the topmost observation deck. I discovered that this particular shirt really shows sweat stains!
Set into the floor of the observation deck halfway up the tower are glass panels that you can look down through. It's a rather unsettling experience.
When is the Tokyo Tower from?
ReplyDeleteLate 1950s. The two observation decks are at 150 meters and 250 meters. The photo on the Wikipedia page clearly shows how Eiffel-Towery the design is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Tower .
